When I get questions about hosting websites I always recommend using shared web hosting services for a variety of reasons. I will try to show some good reasons in this article why you should use shared web hosting services:
- Shared hosting is cheap, only a few dollars per month.
- You do not have to worry about up-time, that is all taken care of.
- You get a great tool for managing your website.
- Email account set up
- Host more than one domain on the same account
- Easy set-up tool for WordPress or Joomla!
- Easy set-up for forum
- Support for PHP and MySQL, including MySQL database for free!
These are just a few things that I know most shared hosting services provide to their users, and not to mention the cPanel tool that controls everything. I mentioned up-time before and for those of you who do not know what it is, I will try to quickly explain it to you.
Up-time is the overall time the hosting company promises that their servers will be up and running. Some claim to have 100% up-time, but I find that to be almost impossible to have so I tend to go with the ones claiming a 99,9% up-time. This tells us that even though they took a back-up, have a mirror server and all the other things to keep servers secure and running, there is always a small chance that the server can go down.
I also mentioned cPanel. It is a mean of the control panel to keep the entire hosting account. Here you can add more domains, set up an email account, install the CMS such as WordPress, Joomla! etc. You can also see how much of a "space" you're using, see when you use shared hosting you get a certain area of space that you can use for your websites, but don't worry, if you run a normal website with text, images and maybe a few videos you will have plenty of space.
